For many men and some women as well, few things are more worrisome than discovering their hair is thinning. After all, most people associate attractiveness with a full head of hair, so going bald can be a huge blow to one’s self esteem. The second main option appeared more recently: Propecia. Also known as finasteride, this drug has some distinct advantages over Rogaine. First of all, clinical studies have shown that it can prevent hair loss over most of the scalp, so it can be effective for cases besides basic male pattern baldness. Also, since it is taken once a day as a pill, there is no messy topical application that leaves your scalp visibly moist.

According to at least one study, Propecia causes visible hair re-growth for at least half of users, and at least 40% of others stop losing hair. The negative aspect of Propecia is that there are a few more potential side effects. The most significant one is a possible decrease in sexual desire or performance for men. The good news is that medical tests have demonstrated that only 1-3% of individuals experience this. Propecia does not seem to be as effective for women.

There are also a few other methods for fighting baldness. Some people believe taking B-12 vitamin supplements boosts healthy hair growth. The shampoo Nizoral, which is normally prescribed for dry scalp and dandruff, has been shown to slow hair loss for some people. Then there are those who swear by eastern remedies such as fish oil. But the only medically certified treatments available are Rogaine and Propecia.

It is important to remember that since these products are still relatively new, it remains to be seen how effective they are in the long term, as well as long term side effects; the majority of patient follow-up tests cases have only been for a few years. In addition, because hair loss can occur for various reasons, it is always best to talk to a doctor before using medication.

The study, published in the American Journal of Human Genetics, claims that a single alteration in the androgen-receptor gene is the main reason why some men end up going bald before their fathers. Nearly half of bald men would not be bald if they did not have this genetic variation. The hair loss in these younger men, he added, was much more serious than in the men who still had a reason to use a comb in their 60s.

Hair Loss Treatment for Genetic Cause

The two approved medicines to treat hair loss (Rogaine and Propecia) need to be taken for a long time to see results. With Propecia, doctors sometimes recommend their patients not to expect any results before at least six to eight months. And both need to be used indefinitely to maintain its effect. Once you stop, hair loss will resume.

Though there are only two medicines approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat hair loss, many people are interested in other, alternative treatments. The herb saw palmetto has been used for many years in Europe to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate and there is some evidence that it may also be effective in treating hair loss. You cannot control about genetic but you can prevent hair loss before it’s too late.

• cold-like symptoms
• rapid heart rate
• has some difficulty in breathing
• unexplained rapid weight gain
• your hair loss has worsen
• swelling or puffiness of hands, face, ankles, or  stomach
• dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting
• problems with vision

These are serious side effects.  You may need urgent medical attention.  These effects are not very common.
Anyway, when this medication is taken properly, it is safe for most people. But for some people that have certain problems, Rogaine is not recommended at all.

Rogaine is not recommended for people with the following conditions;

• people with heart disease
• people who have high or low blood pressure
• people with skin diseases
• people who have allergic reactions with  minoxidil
• pregnant women
• nursing mothers

Keep in mind that Rogaine does not cure the baldness, but it  helps stimulating your hair growth. Therefore, if you have some of Rogaine’s  side effects and they seem to be severe, stop using it. Discuss the conditions  with your doctor and try other drugs to cure your hair loss problem.
